Principal's Message

Welcome to Bath County High School and Mertz CTEC, home of the Bath County Chargers!  We are truly unique among public schools in our ability to provide an educational and social experience that can be tailored to meet the individual needs and aspirations of all of our students. A quick look at our Program of Studies will show the astonishing depth and breadth of our academic, and career and technical course offerings.  Our counseling department offers excellent support to our students.  Students with special needs receive high quality, individualized instruction and support. We offer many dual enrollment classes on campus, offering college credit, through our partnership with Mountain Gateway Community College. Our students may also elect to attend the Jackson River Governor’s School. Our Mertz Career and Technical Education Center offers career paths in Electricity, Carpentry and Woodworking, Business and Technology, Family and Consumer Sciences, and Automotive and Small Engine Mechanics. We even have a Charger Motorsports Racing Team!

Our current student enrollment is under 200 students in grade 8-12. Generous support from the Bath County Board of Supervisors and the Bath County School Board has enabled staffing to provide a very low student/teacher ratio which translates to more personalized student support. Our physical facility is outstanding and our technology capability is superb. All students are issued a computer.

Our sports program offers VHSL sanctioned - football, cheer, basketball, volleyball, softball, baseball, soccer, cross country and tennis. Many of our student/athletes participate in multiple sports. Our BCHS Charger Marching Band is recognized as one of the top high school bands in Virginia. The excellent cooperation that exists in our band and athletic programs allows our athletes (even football and cheer) to participate in the band experience.

Ultimately, it is all about people! Our faculty and staff are very competent and caring. Our students are typically very friendly and cooperative.  Our parents/guardians and community are supportive. Working together, our students have the opportunity to pursue an exceptionally high quality educational and social experience that will prepare them well for a happy, fulfilling, and productive life.

Please feel free to arrange a visit if you wish to visit our campus. We would be proud to have you!
